“I want a career change but don’t know what to do!”

I’ve heard many of my clients say they wanted to make a career change but lacked the tools and guidance to get on the right path.  When we don’t have clarity around what we are going towards we run the risk of jumping into another job that leaves us feeling dissatisfied.

If you want your ideal job, one that you love instead of just pays the bills, then developing a personalised career framework will put you on the right path.

What is a personalised Career Framework?

It’s made up of 4 key components.

  1. Purpose Statement.

This is about understanding your bigger purpose in this world, connecting to the very essence of who you are when you’re at your best.  We all have a desire to make a difference, to create value - all too often this is defined by doing well in our jobs, achieving tasks and goals. But when your career is connected to something bigger and more meaningful, it brings a greater sense of fulfilment than you could have ever imagined.

  2. Values

Have you taken the time to really understand what your work values are and why they are important to you? Most people don’t, yet not having our work values met is often why people feel dissatisfied in their jobs. Once you understand what you value and why, you can seek out a career and organisation that aligns with your values, where you can be empowered to influence change and revel every success.

  3. Work Environment

How often do you think about what ideal work environment would make you truly happy. To have the career you love, what would that involve; travel/no travel, Monday-Friday or would weekends be okay? Being clear on what your ideal work environment looks like will give you the ability to negotiate what you must have and know what you can compromise on.

  4. Skills

How often have you found yourself looking at a potential job, running down the list of skills going yes got that, yes can do that, can’t do that but can wing it, etc.  What you are effectively doing is checking if you’re good enough for the job, whereas what you should be assessing is if the job is good enough for you. Looking at all your skills, not just your job experience and technical ability but your life and personal interest skills as well, can create many possibilities.
Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Taking the time to hone in on the skills you love to use, rather than every skill you have is a critical step to moving your career path forward.

With your personalised Career Framework there are multiple ways to utilise it, for example:

  • You can see where your current role sits within your framework.  Notice what’s out of alignment and consider what you can adjust to get a greater level of satisfaction.

  • For any new roles or opportunities that come up, you can use the framework to guide what you pursue.

  • You can brainstorm career opportunities that fit your personalised framework.  You’ll find you have far more choice than you realised.

I use the Career Framework to help solve the common problem I hear from my clients: “I want a career change but don’t know how to make it”. I get such joy from guiding my clients through each step of the framework and exploring what matters most to them and the best thing is seeing the results. This is what one of my clients had to say about their experience:

“Brenda was amazing at helping me advance my career when I originally had no direction at all.  Her career framework, advice and tools helped me to gain a new role I really enjoyed that matched all my values and interests.  My only regret is that I didn’t start her career coaching sessions years ago!”

Developing a personalised Career Framework is an investment into your future success.
